The Slot Machine

While you are sitting at the casino pulling away at that slot machine, pushing in coin after coin, have you ever considered the history of the slot machine, or the “fruit machine,” as the British say? Well, a mechanic by the name of Charles Fey first invented the slot machine in 1895. It was called the Liberty Bell. Designed with three spinning reels, the first slot machine had diamonds, spades, heart symbols, and the cracked liberty bell painted on them. A spin resulting with all liberty bells gave the biggest payoff, which was a total of fifty cents. Charles Fey also invented the Draw Poker, Three Spinde, and the Klondike. Later, he invented the first draw poker machine. He also devised the trade check separator, which detected fake nickels from the real ones.

Charles Fey would rent out his slot machines to various saloons for fifty percent of the profit. The demand ended up growing beyond Fey’s capabilities to build them, and he refused to sell the rights over to a manufacturer. In 1907, Herbert Mills developed a knock-off version that included the fruit, lemons, plums, and cherries. He called his the Operator Bell.

Daniel Negreanu is now a columnist. He has taken to writing for the Arizona Daily Star. His latest column is about the Main Event at the World Series of Poker. His article has info about the styles of poker seen at the Main Event.

Two areas he covers are weak players and hyper-aggressive players. He details the strategy used to create a hyper player style. The event, which has over 6,000 players, has a lot of novices, who are going to make mistakes. He talks about how to capitalize on those mistakes. Negreanus column also plugs his book, "Power Hold em Strategy."

Daniel Negreanu is a Canadian born professional poker player. He has four World Series of Poker Bracelets as well as two World Poker Tour Championships. Born to Romanian immigrants, Negreanu started playing poker at 15; by 16 he was hustling in pool halls and betting rooms. He dropped out of high school and started playing regularly in events in Toronto. He left for Vegas when he was 21 to start his professional poker career.

Daniel won two events at Foxwoods in 1997 starting off his wining streak, followed by wining a WSOP bracelet in 1998. Wynn Las Vegas Casino has recruited him to be their “Poker Ambassador.”

He also runs Full Contact poker as well as contributes to Poker Stars. He has written numerous articles for card magazines and appears on numerous poker shows. Negreanu is also featured in the 2006 poker video game Stacked with Daniel Negreanu, providing tips and hints as to how to play effectively. As of 2008, his total live tournament winnings exceed $10,100,000.

What does Roulette even mean? In french it means small wheel. At the beginning of the game, you place your bet on which the ball will land on: color, number, odd or even, or a range of numbers. The croupier, or dealer, will spin the wheel in one direction and will spin the ball in the opposite direction that the wheel is turning. The ball will eventually fall in to one of the colored and numbered slots and who ever has the corresponding number, color, or range, wins.

The game has been played in this form since it started in Paris in 1796. Since then, people of all kinds feel that they have the winning strategy to beat the roulette wheel, however, there is no real way to win. The only ideal way to at least get your original bet back is to double every bet after a loss to ensure you at least get what you started with, provided you eventually win before you run out of money. Mathematicians and computer scientists have all tried their hand at cracking the likelihood of the ball falling in to a certain number, or type of number (odd or even).
