The Cool History of Poker
You love poker and you play as often as you can, but did you ever wonder where the game came from? There's no definitive answer, although most historians point towards Persia (modern day Iraq) as the birthplace of this game that continues much as it started. The Persian card game, "As Nas" or just "Nas", that was very popular around the 1500's seems to be where modern poker was born. The difference was that Nas was played with twenty-five cards of five suits each. The game of Nas had many of the same nuances of the poker game Five Card Stud. There is also a similar game that was played with colored pebbles in China around 900 A.D. but most scholars subscribe to poker beginning with Nas as it was played with cards.
Poker made it's entrance onto U.S. soil in New Orleans with a game called "poque" which was later mispronounced a "poker". The game of poque is nearly identicle to the game of five card draw. As people traveled, they took their favorite card game with them and as with all games, there were things added, games added and of course, people learned to be dishonest with it.
Texas Hold 'Em is one of the most popular versions of poker being played in present day and if you aren't already having a regular game at your house, you need very little do so. Just a good poker table, or table top cover, cards and chips and you're ready to roll!
